Frinds: Balancing Work & Home with Kellie Macpherson
FRIENDS!  /  28th February 2018

We catch up with the founder of Castle and Cubby, Kellie Macpherson, to hear how this super cool cubby idea came to life and the important role her two little boys play in the creative process! Read More -->

Castle & Cubby
We built a cubby house and natural play space for our first son and it quite simply sparked my imagination. It appealed to our appreciation of the rustic and raw aesthetic, and knowing we weren’t alone in that appreciation we endeavored to sell a few on the side for some extra cash. Five years later it is now our full time business and we LOVE it.

Well that is definitely not easy; I’d call it a constant balancing act actually. Our priorities are always shifting depending on how busy we are at times of the year. In the crazy busy times we use extra childcare and after school care as well as help around the house, and in the quiet times we drop it right back. We try to make the most of the quiet times with extra time with the kids and catching up on our social lives.

Sustainability, in our mind, is not a buzz word anymore. Eco mindfulness is an ethos that everyone should be embracing and encouraging in every possible way.
As parents of children growing up in a fragile world, we feel an overwhelming sense of responsibility to ensure they have an appreciation of the raw aesthetic. We want them feel at home with recycled and up-cycled and develop a sense of childhood nostalgia for these materials when they grow older. This is why we make it the centre of our business, to make sure we are contributing in some way to the bigger picture.

Absolutely! We have spent time with our children researching play spaces and getting their input on what would be a fun feature. If they had their way though, they would have something that belonged in a Mad Max film. It is my job to bring those ideas and make them look good for Mum and Dad to appreciate also.

With how busy we are at this crazy time of year, the best school holiday activity we can do is just spend time with the kids engaging in activities they are into. Whether it is reading, exploring, making, swinging or jumping, the kids are most happy when we are with them.

Kellie has shared with us one of their favourite school holiday activities below – Paper Fruit.
