Fleece vs Wool
Wool and fleece are both winter winners, just with different superpowers. Wool is a natural fiber that's brilliant at trapping warmth and regulating temperature. It stays warm even when damp and can be wonderfully cozy—especially finer merino wool. Some kids, though, find traditional wool a bit itchy, and it often needs gentler care in the wash.
Fleece is a soft, fluffy knit (commonly polyester-based) that's lightweight, easy-care, and fast-drying. It feels smooth on sensitive skin, resists everyday rough-and-tumble, and is simple to layer without adding bulk. For busy families, that matters: after a muddy adventure, fleece jumps into the wash and bounces back ready for round two.
So how do you choose for your girl's hoodies, jumpers and joggers? Think about the plan for the day. For active play, quick changes, and school-to-playground life, fleece sweats are hard to beat—soft, stretchy, and easy to move in. For extra-chilly climates or slower days outdoors, wool jumpers bring natural warmth and breathability. Many parents use both: wool close to the body on truly cold days, fleece as the cozy mid-layer that locks in the heat without weighing little arms down.
Comfort is personal, too. If your child has sensory sensitivities, fleece often feels cloud-soft right away. If you love a natural fiber story, a soft wool knit can be a beautiful pick—just check for a fine-gauge option and layer over a tee to keep it itch-free. And when laundry day is a sprint between snack time and story time, fleece's quick-dry superpower can save the schedule.
Is Fleece better than wool for winter?
It depends on your winter. For most everyday cold-weather routines—school runs, park hangs, scooter rides—fleece is the practical hero. It's warm for its weight, easy to wash, and comfortable for constant motion. A fleece sweatshirt with joggers makes an instant outfit that feels like a hug and moves like a cheer squad.
If your winters are deep-freeze cold or you spend long stretches outdoors, wool (especially merino) shines for temperature regulation. It helps keep little bodies warm without overheating when they're dashing in and out of the house. In very cold conditions, the dream team is layers: a breathable base (like cotton or merino), a fleece hoodie or jumper as the cozy mid-layer, and a weatherproof coat on top.
Here's a simple way to think about it: choose fleece when you want softness, speed, and easy care; Choose wool when you want natural warmth and gentle climate control. Either way, your child's comfort comes first, and layering lets you mix the best of both.
