What jackets are best for layering in unpredictable weather?
When the forecast can’t make up its mind, smart layers keep you comfy without the bulk. Start with pieces that play well together and shift from morning chill to arvo sun in seconds.
Gilets are the MVP for in-between temps. Lightweight, warm, and arm-free, they add core heat without overheating the rest of you. Throw a gilet over a tee now, over a hoodie later, and stash it in your tote when the sun comes out. Quilted finishes feel elevated, while puff gilets bring that cloud-soft comfort. Look for adjustable hems to trap warmth and an easy, slightly oversized cut so you can layer up underneath.
Packable puffers are your just-in-case layer. They’re light, cosy, and often made with recycled fill for warmth that doesn’t weigh you down. A cropped puffer adds shape over high-waist bottoms; a longline puffer brings extra coverage on windy days. Water-resistant finishes help with surprise showers, and a roomy fit means sweaters and crews slide right under.
Denim jackets earn their spot year-round. The trick is to go oversized so you can layer a knit or hoodie underneath without tight sleeves. Black denim reads a little dressier; vintage blue is the classic. If the weather swings cooler at night, switch to sherpa-lined denim for that snug feel without going full winter coat.
Shackets (shirt + jacket) nail that light-layer sweet spot. Soft, slightly structured, and easy to throw on, they’re perfect over tanks, tees, and long sleeves. If you run warm, choose a brushed cotton or twill shacket. If you run cold, pick a quilted liner shacket to lock in heat.
Trench coats and lightweight coats handle wind and on-off drizzle while keeping your outfit polished. Belt it for shape or leave it open for flow. Neutral tones go with everything; a pop colour or check makes a simple fit feel styled.
Faux leather jackets add weather-friendly edge. They’re wind-blocking, wipe-clean, and surprisingly versatile. A moto toughens up knits and dresses; a faux leather blazer pulls together jeans and a tee. Because the fabric has structure, it layers neatly without bunching.
If rain is part of the plan, reach for a hooded anorak or windbreaker. They’re featherlight with just enough protection, and they pack down when the clouds pass. Cinchable waists and cuffs help you customise the fit on the go.
Here’s the easy formula: breathable base, cosy mid, weather-ready top. Swap the top layer as the day changes. And keep the vibe relaxed—slightly oversized jackets are made for layering, which means less faff and more freedom to move.
Which jacket styles are trending right now?
The jacket lineup this season is all about comfort you can style up or down, with shapes that feel modern but still wearable every day.
Oversized denim is having a moment, and it’s not going anywhere. The fit is boxy in the best way—roomy through the shoulders with a relaxed drape. Vintage washes, contrast stitching, and subtle distressing make it look lived-in from day one. Wear it over a ribbed tank or a slouchy knit, and let the length do the layering for you.
Faux leather is the glow-up your wardrobe’s been waiting for. Moto jackets bring the classic zip-and-belt energy; faux leather blazers add a sleek finish to sweats, suiting, or slip dresses. The best part: it’s tough but soft, with an authentic feel minus the fuss. Black is timeless, but chocolate brown and cream are stepping up for a fresh neutral spin.
Puffers are lighter and smarter. Think cropped puffers for a boxy silhouette up top and longline puffers when the temp drops. Matte finishes keep it minimal; glossy finishes bring a little shine. Expect features like high necks, cosy hoods, and recycled fill that actually keeps you warm. Style them with wide-leg jeans or active sets—sporty, but make it cute.
Gilets are the trend that turns out to be a staple. Quilted, puff, or funnel-neck styles add instant texture. They’re perfect over crewnecks and cargos now, then over dresses when spring hits. The key is proportion: try a slightly longer gilet over a fitted base, or a cropped cut over high-waist bottoms to keep your shape.
Bombers and varsity jackets serve that throwback-sport vibe with a modern fit. Look for a roomy shoulder, neat cuffs, and minimal branding so the jacket does the talking. Satin, twill, and faux leather sleeves all read current, and they pair with basically everything—from minis to track pants.
Trench coats keep the quiet-lux energy strong. Clean lines, soft shoulders, and a belt you can knot and go. They layer over hoodies just as easily as a shirt and tailored pants, so they pull double duty between off-duty and on-duty days.
Coats get two big directions: polished and plush. Wool-blend and brushed styles look put-together without feeling precious. Teddy and sherpa textures bring peak cosy. Either way, the silhouette is relaxed and wearable, often with a drop shoulder so it drapes instead of clings.
Utility and cargo jackets are back with bigger pockets and better fabric. They add structure to flowy skirts, give denim-on-denim a break, and make basics feel intentional. Olive, sand, and ink are easy wins that go with your whole wardrobe.
Colour-wise, neutrals are the base—think black, stone, camel, and soft grey. Then add pops: cherry red, cobalt, pastel lilac, even a metallic moment if you’re feeling extra. Texture does a lot of the styling for you, so quilted gilets, brushed coats, and faux leather finishes instantly elevate simple fits.
Whatever you’re into, our women’s jackets are built to fit your life. Many styles use recycled fibres or better-sourced materials, so you can feel good while you look good. Sizing is inclusive, fits are tried-and-tested, and the details are thought through—from pockets that actually fit your phone to cuffs and hems you can adjust on the fly. Throw one on, head out, and make it yours.
