New inspiring space for students at Ethekwini
Ethekwini Primary School, reopens its doors after an exciting transformation with 1,280 educational places for students.
Ethekwini Primary School, reopens its doors after an exciting transformation with 1,280 educational places for students. It marks our first Cotton On Foundation supported school in South Africa, and the 24th school we’ve supported around the world!
It's one of the oldest primary schools in KwaMashu, Durban, with many students coming from the surrounding areas. Since forming our friendship with the community in 2015, we’ve worked to redevelop the original infrastructure as part of our mission to empower youth globally through quality education. And it’s thanks to your support that the coming year is set to be the best one yet.
So, what’s new?
- 16 additional classrooms
- 37 new washing facilities
- Two kitchens
- A staffroom
- A tuckshop
- Two playgrounds
- A new admin block for staff
To top it off, colourful murals and quotes fill the space—all inspired by the students themselves.
“The difference this is going to make to the students—I think they’ll come to school motivated and excited. If you put this together with the dedicated educators and well-resourced classrooms, I think we’re going to see amazing results.”
— Gabisile Cecilia Zulu, Head Teacher at Ethekwini Primary School
Bridging the pathway to secondary education
The addition of new classrooms means students can now complete up to Grade 7 at Ethekwini Primary School. Something that wasn’t available before. We’re excited to also be supporting Dr JLL Dube High School – a secondary school not far from Ethekwini. Making the journey into secondary education more accessible for all students.
