All for women,
All for music

When we stand for equality, we open the doors for everyone. This month, we're throwing the mic to six kickass female artists using their voices for change.

These tees are helping to create a better future for girls. For every IWD tee purchased, we’re donating $10 to the Cotton On Foundation, empowering young women through quality education and wellbeing programs.

HARLEY MAVIS

Singer-songwriter Harley Mavis has crafted her own blend of infectious folk-rock, weaving together unapologetic lyrics and stops-you-in-your-tracks choruses. It comes as no surprise then that the Sydney-based artist grew up belting out all-female ballads in her bedroom. Her recent releases ‘No Chance’ and ‘Magnolia’ are both laid-back and get-on-your-feet energetic.

“Being a queer musician, as well as a female, I’ve learnt the importance of being strong and independent, and really knowing who you are. It’s important to vouch for other female and non-binary artists - we need to become a family and support each other.”

"I always get recommended male producers to work with – and they’re amazing. But I'd love to see more women involved in that side of the industry."

SAN MEI

A self-confessed romantic, San Mei is no stranger to writing a good love song. Her latest single ‘Heaven’ is an addictive, yet sobering look at love when the rose-colored glasses come off. Like a fly on the wall in her own imperfect daydream, San Mei draws you in with guitar and synth-laden beats, and lyrics that pull at the heartstrings. One to play on repeat.

THIS WAY NORTH

This Way North's Cat Leahy (drums & vocals) and Leisha Jungalwalla (electric guitar & vocals) have no fixed address - and that’s just how they like it. Having spent the last two years on the road, they’ve toured everywhere from The Yukon in the Canadian wilderness, to the heart of the Australian desert. Their recent EP Vol.2 shows the duo’s evolution from their early days of rootsy rock, to more a harmony-driven alt-pop sound and this new release took out the 2018 best regional act at The Age Music Victoria Awards.

“You look at a festival lineup and there's on average about 20% female inclusion. We’ve all been competing for this very small space and so, historically there’s been a lot of competitiveness. The most important thing is to help empower women in the industry - we need to come together as a team and help support each other to continue to create a bigger platform and move towards gender equality.”

“The studio is a very male-dominant world and with that comes a lot of personalities. I’ve been told: ‘You don’t know how you feel’ and ‘Girls don’t feel or think that way’ in regards to a song I wrote about not feeling attached to someone. There’s a power in learning to stand up for yourself.”

EVANGELINE

The first thing you notice about Evangeline’s sound is a sense of upbeat darkness. Like being at a party where no one’s smiling, but it somehow still makes you want to get up and dance. Moody electro-pop at its best. Her latest collaboration with Oriental Cravings sees her layering those gives-you-the-chills vocals over rattling trap beats in the latest single ‘Need You’.

MAYA

Way before she honed her soulfully layered sound, Maya spent her childhood improvising at gigs with her musician father. That freestyle spirit remains unchanged. For Maya music is an escape - and that’s exactly what she gives back. Her recent release ‘Blackout’ is a super-honest retelling of her own disorienting moments, from losing memories to struggling with her Australian/African-American/Hungarian identity.

“People try and over-sexualise you as a woman, because of this idea that it helps your music sell. I’ve had a lot of moments where I’ve had to say ‘no’ and remind myself it doesn’t matter what I look like, it matters how I sound.”

ALL FOR WOMEN

Original tracks from our featured artists and the female artists they love.
